Reid Calls For More Of The Same

Everton legend Peter Reid is calling for more of the same this evening when Everton entertain Brentford at Goodison Park (5.30pm BST).

“It’s another cup final so get out there and win it,” he said. “Show the same intensity from the first whistle and we’ll win it.”

Reid was at Goodison Park on Wednesday night to see the Blues win the Merseyside derby and it’s safe to say that he enjoyed what he saw.

“Every one of the players stood up to be counted. And I have to say we had an extra player out there…and that was the supporters. It was like the old days, and it reminded me of certain games that I played in. It was one of the best nights I’ve had at Goodison Park. It was just magnificent.

“You’re not going to play well in every game, we all understand that, but if you put a shift in like every player did, the crowd will be with you. Your passing can be off but what doesn’t change is that you can stop the opposition from playing and that’s a big thing in football.”

Reid, who won two league titles, an FA Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup during his Everton playing days, suggested that Sean Dyche got his tactics spot on against Liverpool.

“The modern game now is controlled football but there are different ways of playing,” he said. “If you’ve got a centre-forward who will win balls in the air, like we did because Calvert-Lewin was tremendous, then play to his strengths.

“I was watching it and thinking ‘get the ball in the box because they don’t look as though they can handle it’.

“It shows me what we can do. Earlier in the season we weren’t scoring goals, and that was a big problem. At this level if you don’t stick them in, you’ll always be under pressure but thankfully, we stuck them in against Liverpool.”
