Sorensen On Key To Victory In 'Special' Derby

Brian Sorensen says his Everton team will give “absolutely everything they have to get the three points” in Sunday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The Blues welcome Liverpool for a 1pm (GMT) kick-off in a highly-anticipated encounter in the Women’s Super League, and tickets can still be purchased online here.

Everton have a strong record in recent outings against their Merseyside rivals, winning three of their past four league meetings, including a 1-0 victory at Anfield earlier this season.

Despite this, the Toffees – who have suffered injury setbacks in recent weeks – mustn’t rely on past form, says Sorensen, who previewed Sunday’s game in his pre-match press conference at Finch Farm.

“It’s always extremely nice to play in front of so many fans, and at Goodison, there are not so many games left, so it makes it even more special,” he said.

“On Sunday, everything that happened before doesn’t really count. Also, with injuries we have at the moment and Liverpool’s good form, so there are different things. We’ve probably been in better condition as a group than we are right now.

“It still comes down to the day. We need to get our stuff right and perform, and then I think we have a good chance of winning, of course.”

The Blues have benefitted from training on the Goodison pitch leading up to the weekend’s encounter, and Sorensen spoke about the advantages of that exercise.

He says his side will need to be tactically disciplined on Sunday, and able to keep possession to prevent Liverpool’s transitional strengths.

“[I’m looking forward to it] a lot,” he revealed. “We’re so thrilled to get back to Goodison.

"We trained there in the week and it’s a really nice place to be. We always do that, just so you get used to the environment and the pitch. We had really good training there, so I think that’s always a positive thing that it’s possible to do.

“[We need to] keep the ball. Make them suffer, in terms of them having to be disciplined in the defence. But we need to be good at keeping the ball, so we can dominate. If we make it into a transitional game, they have the players and the squad for that.

“So we want to dominate the ball. We’ve been quite good at doing that in the derbies against them, so that’s definitely one of the key factors.

“We’ll put everything we have into game to win. I think you’ll see a team on Sunday who’ll give absolutely everything they have to get the three points.”

Heading into the game, Matt Beard's Liverpool sit fifth in the table, four places above Everton. Nevertheless, the Blues manager insists his team can take the positives from recent strong showings into Sunday’s derby.

Speaking on the opposition, Sorensen added: “I went to watch [Liverpool’s] game on Sunday against West Ham, and they looked good. West Ham have a good team, but Liverpool looked like the dominant side and were in control. They also have all their key players available, so I think it’s a big challenge.

“But I still think, looking at our performances against Chelsea and Manchester City, we can definitely do things against really good teams. No disrespect to Liverpool, but I don’t think they are Chelsea or City.

“That’s why I think we can dominate a game like that. That’s our aim and that’s what we’ll try to do.”
