Lampard Reveals Everton 'Hunger'

Frank Lampard has praised the attitude of his "hungry" squad ahead of Saturday's clash with Southampton at St Mary's.

The Blues head to the south coast looking to build momentum following an impressive 3-0 home win over Leeds United last time out.

Lampard opted to shuffle formation and personnel for the victory over Marcelo Bielsa's side and says he will again assess all available options before making final decisions on his line-up after a productive week of training at USM Finch Farm.

"I have to make choices and we've been thinking about it all this week," he said at his pre-match press conference. "There’s an argument for going with the same again - we kind of felt similarly going into Newcastle [after the 4-1 FA Cup win over Brentford] and it didn’t quite work.

"So, it’s not a statement of fact [that we will be unchanged].

"All of the players have to feel through the week that they can find a way into the team, or if we have to change our approach for the opposition because, going from Leeds to Southampton, they two very good teams in lots of different ways.

"I’ll consider that as we go – and the good thing is we have got players who are playing well and we have got players who are hungry to get into the team.

"That’s exactly the environment that you want."

Asked about the importance of keeping a clean sheet against Leeds - the first time the Toffees had recorded one in 13 games - Lampard added: "It was [a priority] amongst others. The important thing is winning games in the Premier League and, with the level of it, you can concede goals.

"You just try find a way to limit the opportunities of the other team and one of the big plusses of the Leeds game is that we pressed well in their half.

"We didn’t allow them territory, which they generally have in their games against opposition in possession, and that meant they stayed far away from our goal, and only had a couple of long-range efforts.

"There were nice bits about how we kept that clean sheet, which we have to work on moving forward.

"Of course, it helps in a big way but it’s very much a team effort in term of keeping clean sheets, as is attacking.

"We work consistently on both sides of that."

Dominic Calvert-Lewin recovered from a minor knock for last weekend's match - and impressed as the focal point of Everton's attack before being withdrawn in a tactical switch on 72 minutes.

And Lampard says the England international will continue to be pushed in the correct manner, as he bids to regain his peak following a season disrupted by injury.

"I hope soon [we will see him back to his best]," added Lampard. "I thought we saw parts of that in the Leeds performance when, in honesty, probably Dominic was 70, 75 percent fit.

"When I say that, I mean he is physically and medically fit, but coming into a game of that level of physical output, I’m asking a lot of him, and he gave me 70 minutes of a really good performance.

"So, it’s step-by-step. He’s trained very well this week.

"Now that we have him medically fit we can push him in training at the right moments and, with the level of player that he is, I hope and expect that to be very soon."
