Payne's Focus On Everton Positives

Heather Payne said Everton will focus on the "positives" following Sunday's defeat to Leicester City and has welcomed the quick turnaround for their next challenge.

The Blues fell to a slender 1-0 loss against the Foxes, with Lena Petermann's strike in the 69th minute proving the difference between the two sides.

It was a strong showing from Brian Sorensen's team, with the manager himself claiming they "did everything right" from a performance perspective when he spoke to evertontv following the contest on Sunday afternoon.

That sentiment was echoed by Payne in her interview, as she admitted the team were deeply frustrated with the result but eager to bounce back in this week's Continental League Cup clash at home against Manchester City (Wednesday, kick-off 7pm BST).

"We played so much better than last week, which is what we wanted to do," said Payne. "We are gutted we didn't get at least one goal to grab a point. But we will go back and look at the game. We played well and have to look at some of the positives. It's a quick turnaround, we play Manchester City in the Conti Cup on Wednesday so we will be looking to that now."

Payne joined the Blues this summer following four years in the United States with college side Florida State Seminoles. She made her debut in the game against Brighton last weekend and completed her first full 90 minutes for the Club against Leicester.

The Republic of Ireland international acknowledged it was nice to get her first full 90 under her belt with Everton, but admitted the overriding emotion was one of frustration following the loss.

"I'm happy to get my first 90 minutes under my belt, but I am gutted, we had so many good chances," explained Payne. "We definitely should have won the game, let alone lose it. I am so disappointed.

"After coming off the loss last weekend, we knew it would be tough again but we wanted to come in stronger and be more physical. I think we did that so I am gutted."

Despite Payne's frustrations, she was eager to acknowledge the great support of the travelling Toffees and can't wait for more support like that again this week when the Blues welcome City.

"You could hear the fans throughout the whole game, and it's great for them to travel for these games," she added. "We are disappointed that we couldn't get a point out of the game for them. But the support has been great, from last weekend to this one and we can't wait to hear them again."
