Everton Begin Pre-Season With Burnley Win

Everton’s pre-season campaign is off to a winning start as Brian Sørensen's side beat Burnley 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The match was played behind-closed-doors at Finch Farm with the Danish boss fielding a full-strength side that featured new signings Martina Piemonte, Emma Bissell, Justine Vanhaevermaet and the returning Emily Ramsey.

Sørensen also awarded two starts to a set of trialists with the pair contributing to the opening goals of the game.

The first saw Bissell’s shot towards the Burnley goal palmed away into the path of a trialist who latched onto the rebound and slotted home after 17 minutes.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when the opening goalscorer pulled the ball back to another trialist who struck on the edge of the area with pin-point accuracy into the bottom right corner.

Everton’s first half dominance continued but a breakaway move from the visitors almost saw them pull one back.

The ball flew across goal for a certain tap-in for Burnley, but a brilliant save from Ramsey denied Leah Embley from close range.

The Blues had their third of the afternoon on 39 minutes from the most unlikely angle.

After the Burnley goalkeeper denied Vanhaevermaet a volleyed effort into the top-right corner, Elise Stenevik stepped up at the corner flag and curled the ball into the net.

Into the second half as Sorensen made several changes with Academy stars entering the field.

Aiesha Nsangou, Molly Philpott, Rubie Deaville, Amy Richardson and Issy Hobson all giving a strong account for themselves at senior level.

Burnley were able to secure a consolation effort late into the pre-season clash.

Aimee Kelly intercepted a back pass and placed the ball underneath Ramsey on 85 minutes.

A strong opening account for Sørensen's side as he reflected on the first fixture of the pre-season campaign.

"It was a good performance from our girls," he told evertonfc.com.

"Burnley were a fine team to play against. They were well structured and it was good for us to implement some of the things we have been working on in recent weeks.

"It was a really beneficial match compared to our first friendly last year in terms of the numbers we have in. We have a performance that we can build from.

"All of our new signings did well, they showed why we have recruited them.

"Our Academy players performed well too. It's hard for them to come in and compete at senior level, and our style of play isn't the easiest to pick up and learn.

"Nevertheless, they did well and they can take a lot from this experience.

"Overall it was a really good day for the group."
