James Tarkowski has urged his Everton teammates to avoid complacency ahead of Wednesday evening’s Merseyside derby.

The defender captained the Blues to a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday - an important result following the disappointing defeat at Chelsea earlier in the week.

Speaking after Sunday’s win, and quoted by the Liverpool ECHO, Tarkowski said: “I’ll smile for now - we can enjoy it - but there is still a lot of work to be done. After Monday [against Chelsea], we needed to respond, and I think we did.

“These are tough games against teams down here [in the table], battling for their lives like we are. To come out on top, two great goals and a real resilient performance.

“Monday was a real bad day for us and for everyone at the Club. To respond, get to our home ground and perform the way we have, and get three points, which is nice because it’s been a long time without winning many games.

“It’s nice to get three points on the board, but we’re not getting carried away.”

Going into the game against Liverpool, Everton could be without Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto, after both forwards sustained injuries last time out.

Writing for the Liverpool World, journalist Will Rooney speculates over whether Sean Dyche could opt for Youssef Chermiti as the Toffees’ loan striker.

“[Calvert-Lewin] was substituted midway through the second half of the Toffees’ 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest last weekend.

“It was a knee problem that the 27-year-old sustained against Forest. He received treatment and carried on before being replaced by Beto. Dyche was not overly concerned by Calvert-Lewin’s issue at his post-match press conference, although Everton look highly likely to be without Beto for Liverpool’s visit to Goodison Park.

“The Portuguese suffered a sickening head injury when he clashed with Morgan Gibbs-White in stoppage-time. Beto was knocked unconscious and received lengthy treatment before being taken hospital. While he was given the all-clear, FA concussion protocol means that Beto is likely for a spell on the sidelines.

"If Dyche did decide to rest Calvert-Lewin then it could hand a full Premier League debut to Chermiti. The Portugal youth international has had to be patient since arriving from Sporting CP last summer.

“Chermiti has been used sporadically from the bench, making a total of 15 appearances. He’s also made a handful of appearances for the under-21s, scoring the winner in a 1-0 success over League Two promotion outfit Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy and bagged a brace in a 3-1 win against Fulham last month.”
