Pickford On Blues' Appetite For Latest Top-Six Test

Jordan Pickford says Everton are relishing the prospect of tackling another top-six side when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Everton, who will paying their first visit to the London club’s revamped White Hart Lane home, have beaten the illustrious trio of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in the past two months.

The Toffees completed their Goodison Park campaign seven days ago with victory over Burnley, extending their unbeaten run on home turf to a fifth match.

And Marco Silva's side go to Champions League finalists Spurs aiming for a sixth away success this term, a total they have reached once in the past nine seasons – the 2013-14 campaign when Everton won eight times on the road.

For goalkeeper Pickford, the clash with Mauricio Pochettino’s side represents an opportunity to record a ninth clean sheet in 11 Premier League outings.

“We have shown how good we can be in the past few months and want to continue the same way,” said Pickford.

“Spurs away is always a tough match and they started well in their new stadium.

“It is another game we should look forward to – and another side in the top six we want to try to beat.

“We will make sure we’re ready to try to get three points.

“It is a great position to be in, knowing I have the lads in front of me working so hard.

“Keeping clean sheets is great for our confidence and we know we have the ability to go up the other end and score goals.

“I’ve not been too busy in the past 10 games or so but I will be ready when I am called on.”

Pickford has amassed 14 top-flight shutouts this term, a total eclipsed only by his counterparts at Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Everton's rearguard has not been breached for 291 minutes, a spell featuring the wins over United and Burnley and a draw at Crystal Palace.

Manager Silva’s side has scored six goals in the period – increasing their tally to 52 for the season, eight more than in 2017-18.

And Pickford says a slice of the credit for Everton’s development this term must be apportioned to the Club’s summer 2018 signings.

French defensive duo Lucas Digne and Kurt Zouma were joined at Goodison by Richarlison and Bernard, the two Brazilian attackers brought in from Watford and Shakhtar Donetsk respectively.

Midfielder Andre Gomes and centre-back Yerry Mina both arrived from Barcelona, the former on a season-long loan and Colombian Mina on permanent terms.

Everton’s capture of those half-dozen internationals, insists Pickford, had the twin-effect of supplying additional quality and intensifying competition for places.

Pickford also reserved praise for the Evertonians who have been generating a cacophonous Goodison atmosphere of late –  and, typically, will back their team in significant numbers at Tottenham’s sold-out stadium this weekend.

“Playing in front of the Evertonians is great,” continued England first-choice keeper Pickford.

“We know they love a good tackle and when one goes in, it gets them going. We understand how much Everton means to the supporters.

“Our effort comes from the hard work the lads put in and the tactical stuff we do all week.

“If we lose the ball, three or four players are pressing and trying to get it back.

“There is a lot of competition for places, which gives the manager some difficult decisions every week, but that is how players get the best out of each other.

“We played very well in some of the away games against sides near the top of the league earlier this season.

"We were good at Arsenal and Manchester United but could not get the first goal. That is what we have started to do in the past few months and you can see the results.

“The squad is young and still developing and our intention is to kick on again next season.”
