Davies: We Must Be More Ruthless

Tom Davies admitted Everton must be more ruthless after the Blues were edged out 1-0 against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

The Toffees created numerous chances during the game – and hit the woodwork twice in the second half – but could not break the home team’s resistance.

As it was, Andre Gray’s 65th-minute strike proved the difference as the Hornets earned a narrow victory.

The first half saw Everton regularly advance into threatening positions, with Watford keeper Ben Foster twice forced into making impressive stops.

First, he kept out Kurt Zouma’s firm header before beating away a well-hit Cenk Tosun effort.

Etienne Capoue came closest for Watford – Jordan Pickford pulling out a remarkable point-blank save when the Frenchman lashed at goal from no more than six yards out.

Everton almost had the breakthrough when Gylfi Sigurdsson struck the upright with a delicate lob just after half-time.

After Gray got the home side’s goal, the Toffees carved out several opportunities to snatch an equaliser. Tosun prodded just past the post from Theo Walcott’s centre and Lucas Digne’s free-kick cannoned off the crossbar.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin then headed agonisingly wide from Zouma’s fine cross.

Everton Academy graduate Davies – who captained the Blues for the second successive Premier League match – says the Toffees will be working hard on the training ground as they aim to turn around their results.

“We had enough chances to get a different result and we could have done better, we know that,” Davies said.

“We are disappointed. We’re not happy with the result.

“And if we can’t win it, we just have to try to keep a clean sheet and get a 0-0.

“We have to look at the last few games [and see how we can improve].”
