Richarlison: Team Unity Can Drive Blues Forward

Richarlison emphasised the strong unity and togetherness within the Everton squad as he set out the team’s desire to summon a strong finish to the season.

The Blues can move up to seventh in the Premier League table with a victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Marco Silva’s side head into the game on the back of a 1-0 success at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night – Richarlison’s 11th goal of the season proving the difference at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The 21-year-old showcased his predatory instincts to stab the ball home at the second time of asking after Terriers stopper Jonas Lossl repelled his initial effort.

The Toffees played almost a third of the match with 10 men after Lucas Digne’s second-half sending off but dug in impressively to secure maximum points.

Richarlison believes Everton’s strong team spirit was key to Tuesday’s victory and insists the players are now determined to build momentum by seeing off Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves at the Grand Old Lady on Saturday.

“I think it’s really important we’re united both on and off the pitch,” he said.

“We do everything together, we have breakfast together, lunch together, and we’re developing strongly together every day.

“Being knocked out of the Cup [at Millwall] really hurt us because we really wanted to progress in that competition. We aimed to put things right in training, working on the set plays, and I think we corrected a lot of those things against Huddersfield.

“There was the red card and we managed to absorb their pressure for the rest of the game.

“We really went out there and gave our all. We needed those three points to move up the table.

“Now we have Wolves on Saturday and they’re a good team.

“I think it’s going to be a great game and they are two points ahead of us so it’s important that we get the win. We’ll do everything to finish in the highest position possible and fight to the end.”

Richarlison has fond memories of taking on Wolves after his scintillating Toffees debut against the Midlands club on the opening day of the season.

The Brazilian hit a brace in a 2-2 draw at Molineux and detailed how his electric start to life at Everton helped lay the platform for his impressive maiden campaign with the Club.

“I’d never scored two goals on my debut before and to do it in a competition as competitive as the Premier League, I was overjoyed,” he said.

“It was unforgettable. I got a trophy for man of the match as well.

“It helped a lot [to get off to a good start].

“I had managed to get some of the pre-season in, too, and I scored in a friendly - that was great in terms of the trust placed in me by the other players.

“That helped a lot and I fitted in really quickly. I’m talking to everybody on a daily basis and hope to become an even stronger part of the team and squad.”

Richarlison’s impressive form for the Blues saw him handed a first Brazil call-up in August.

He marked his first start for the five-time world champions by scoring twice in a 5-0 victory over El Salvador in Washington DC and has remained a fixture in boss Tite’s squad ever since.

He also netted in Brazil’s final game of 2018, heading a brilliant winner in a 1-0 success against Cameroon in Milton Keynes.

The former Fluminense player insists his move to Everton has been instrumental in achieving international recognition and helping to elevate his game to new levels.

“Things have been really good for me [at Everton] and I really thank my teammates for their contribution to my good football on the pitch,” he said.

“Things can always get better, so I’m really focussed on doing well for the Club, on my objectives and the Brazilian national team as well.

“Now I’ve been called up I want to be involved in every squad and in order for that to happen I need to be doing my best here every day.”
