Calvert-Lewin On Target For England U21s

Gylfi Sigurdsson, Ademola Lookman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were all in the thick of the action for their countries as the international break kicked off in style for Everton.

The pick of Thursday’s bunch was the newly-recalled France duo of Lucas Digne and Kurt Zouma square off against Gylfi Sigurdsson’s Iceland in a friendly serving as a warm-up for Les Bleus’ Nations League tie with Germany next week.

France, of course, lifted the World Cup last summer after they beat Croatia in the final out in Russia but they were brought down to earth with a bump as Iceland raced to a 2-0 lead at the Stade de Guingamp.

First Bikir Bjarnason fired home the opener before Sigurdsson’s corner was turned in by Kari Arnason.

But France, with Digne playing the full 90 minutes and Zouma coming on at half time, responded with two goals of their own as Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson put through his own net and Kylian Mbappe struck with only added time remaining.

Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted twice as England Under-21 thumped Andorra 7-0 at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium.

After Ademola Lookman opened the scoring on eight minutes, young Blues striker Calvert-Lewin scored either side of half time to put the game beyond the Andorrans.

Jonjoe Kenny and Tom Davies also started and provided assists in the young Lions’ Under-21 European Championship qualifying win which guaranteed England's place at the tournament in Italy and San Marino.

Two other Everton youngsters were in Under-21 Euros qualifying action, with Shayne Lavery starting Northern Ireland’s clash with Iceland, which ended in a 1-0 success, however Harry Charsley’s Republic of Ireland lost 3-1 in Israel.

Over in Turkey, Cenk Tosun played 45 minutes of his countries’ 0-0 friendly draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina, for whom Mo Besic was an unused substitute.
