Digne Striving To Continue Unbeaten Run

Lucas Digne insists Everton are intent on continuing their unbeaten start to the season as the Blues prepare to take on Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Marco Silva’s side continued their impressive early-season form with a 3-1 victory over Rotherham United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, with left-back Digne making a hugely encouraging full debut for the Toffees.

The 25-year-old, who signed from Barcelona earlier this summer, defended assiduously throughout and carried a constant threat going forward.

The France international offered many glimpses of his considerable quality on the ball, none more so than when he assisted Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Everton’s second goal of the night. On his supposed weaker right foot, Digne whipped in a delicious, curling cross for the 21-year-old forward, leaving him with the simplest of tasks to nod home.

Digne says the squad are now resolved to seeing off Huddersfield on Saturday and heading into the international break on a high.

“The win was important for the team, for the spirit,” he told evertontv. “We are unbeaten now and we need to continue.

“I am happy with the assist but it is not so important. I prefer to win the game, that is the most important.

“It is very difficult to play against teams from the Championship and they played very well, so we are happy to be in the next round.

“It is a competition everybody wants to win, us included.”

During a trophy-laden career that has included spells at Lille, Paris St Germain, Roma and Barcelona, Digne has played at some of the grandest stadiums in Europe.

To name but a few, the Frenchman has turned out at the Camp Nou, San Siro, Stadio Olimpico, Celtic Park and the Mestalla. Wednesday’s clash represented Digne’s first competitive game at Goodison Park, however, and the Frenchman spoke in glowing terms about the atmosphere at the Grand Old Lady.

The near-32,000 crowd for the round two Carabao Cup clash was the biggest for an Everton home game at this stage of the competition since 1968, when 35,477 watched the Blues beat neighbours Tranmere Rovers 4-0.

“The fans were amazing,” Digne said. “I enjoyed it a lot. The stadium was full and for a cup game, it was great.

“It’s better, of course, because the team won we played well. It was a perfect night.”
