Determined Davies Eager To Seize Opportunities

Tom Davies believes the strong competition for places at Everton can help to elevate his performances, as he expressed his determination to seize every opportunity he gets to impress.

The Academy graduate came on as a 24th-minute substitute in the Toffees’ 2-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday and contributed to another effervescent Blues display.

Playing alongside the tireless Idrissa Gana Gueye in the heart of the Everton midfield, the 20-year-old covered an impressive amount of ground and helped get the Blues on the attack with his incisive, progressive passing.

The quality of Davies’ work in possession was emphasised by his 88 per cent passing accuracy, which was the highest of any player on the pitch who completed more than 45 minutes.

The West Derby-born youngster is convinced the depth and competitiveness of the Everton squad will only serve to improve his game.

“There’s big competition so for me when I get a chance I’ve got to take it so that’s what I tried to do [against Southampton],” Davies told evertontv.

“In training I’m always trying to be at my best and trying to show how good I am, as the other lads are.

“It’s always high-tempo training and everyone trying to get in the team, so it’s only going to benefit me.

“This year I’m hoping to progress again and under the manager I think I can do that.”

After bursting on to the scene in the 2016-17 campaign, Davies featured 43 times for Everton last season, with only Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin making more first-team appearances.

The Academy graduate believes the experience he has got under his belt will serve him well as he seeks to elevate his game to a new level under Marco Silva.

Davies is confident he boasts the attributes to thrive as the manager strives to shape a fast-paced, dynamic Everton side and revealed his excitement about developing his game under the Portuguese.

“The way the manager plays suits me and the way he wants me to play is how I like to play and see the game,” he said.

“It’s high tempo. He wants me to press, get forward, be a box-to-box midfielder. That’s how I want to play, really, so it’s good to have that sort of freedom and role in the team.

“It’s something I’m looking forward to this year, developing into the player I want to be.”
